Los Angeles eateries will keep serving up combinations of bacon, chicken, egg and blue cheese that are essential to its signature Cobb salads. And Scots can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Edinburgh has no plans to outlaw haggis. Yet officials from each of these cities want people to consume less dairy and meat. The treaty is not binding and its effect varies wildly, ranging from just messaging to concrete plans to reduce dairy and meat served in institutions and schools and cut down on food waste. But local leaders who championed the treaty said it helped solidify their efforts to encourage plant consumption for both climate and health reasons, while also sending a pressing message.

CNN —Highland winds lashing his face, architect Jim Hartsell was a long way from his home in Alabama. Alone, utterly drained both physically and emotionally, he was about to do something he had never done before — abandon a round at a Scottish golf course. Three months earlier, in May 2021, Jordan Hartsell had died of an accidental drug overdose. If there were any answers, he hoped he would find them on a trip to his spiritual home, Scotland. Senders vary from those who have suffered a similar loss, to those chasing travel tips for Scotland, and Hartsell welcomes them all.

However, the top flight of English soccer had never seen an Australian manager in its 31-year history – that is until the arrival of Ange Postecoglou. Ian MacNicol/Getty ImagesThe Australian was greeted with a similar reception when he was hired by London club Tottenham in the summer of 2023. “He’s inspired Australian football and inspired Australian football coaches,” Dr. Craig Duncan, one of the nation’s leading sports scientists who worked with Postecoglou during his tenure with the Socceroos – the Australian national team – told CNN Sport. How Jewish People Built the American Theater

Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

The dominant political party in Scotland for almost two decades, the pro-independence Scottish National Party has been damaged by infighting, voter fatigue and scandals, including the arrest of its charismatic former leader Nicola Sturgeon. Even with support for the SNP in decline, opinion polls show Scotland is still roughly split over independence. "Support for independence is rock solid but support for the SNP has dipped," he said.

The Spain striker was the centre of attention again when midfielder Gavi fired home four minutes after the break and another VAR offside check ensued, but this time he was in the clear and the goal was allowed to stand. Norway set up to hit Spain on the break but struggled to create much in attack as the visitors kept striker Erling Haaland shackled to reach the finals with two games to spare. A brilliant volley from Yunus Akgun just before the hour put Turkey on course for a comprehensive win against Latvia that ensured they will take their place at next year's tournament. Gavi's winning goal for Spain against Norway in a European Championship qualifier on Sunday will likely have been cheered as wildly in Glasgow as it was in Madrid. The Barcelona midfielder's strike at Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo secured a 1-0 win that means both Spain and Scotland have qualified for Euro 2024. Scotland might not harbor realistic ambitions of winning Euro 2024, but it has arguably exceeded expectations by qualifying from Group A. Wales moved up to second in the group ahead of Croatia in third, with both teams on 10 points. Poland drew 1-1 with Moldova to leave those teams three points and four points off the top respectively.

Researchers said on Monday the solar storm - the sun sending a large burst of energetic particles into space - occurred 14,300 years ago. Nine such extreme solar storms now have been identified using tree-ring radiocarbon evidence, with the most recent in 774 and 993 AD. The largest directly observed solar storm, called the Carrington Event, occurred in 1859, wreaking havoc on telegraphs and creating a nighttime aurora so bright that birds sang as if the sun was rising. The effects of solar storms can disable electronics. "If similar solar storms happened today, they could be catastrophic for society, as we are so reliant upon technology," Heaton said.

The depth in England's squad was apparent though as they controlled the contest to give Scotland a reality check. "The first half we didn't really get started and England dominated the ball," Scotland boss Steve Clarke told Channel 4. MARSEILLE, France, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Scotland have one win in 21 years against world champions South Africa over their last 15 meetings, but there is a genuine belief among the class of 2023 they can claim victory in their Rugby World Cup Pool B opener in Marseille on Sunday. This is despite the fact they are in a tough group that also includes world number one Ireland, with two teams to progress to the quarter-finals. "We've done well recently with an underdog tag, but I don't think we need it. Scotland have lost their last seven in a row against the Boks but have only met them twice in the previous five years. In August, Yamal made his full debut for Barcelona to become the youngest player to start a La Liga match in the 21st century, and he was named the league’s U23 player for that month. Tough calls for Townsend in finalising Scotland World Cup squad
  + stars: | 2023-08-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
EDINBURGH, Aug 16 - Scotland coach Gregor Townsend admitted he had to have some difficult conversations with players left out of his 33-man World Cup squad, which was announced on Wednesday. The Scots had begun pre-tournament preparations with 41 players and the numbers were then reduced to 37 earlier this month before Wednesday’s final cut. Those dropped include Stuart McInally, who captained the side at the last World Cup and was hoping for a final swansong before quitting rugby later this year to become an airline pilot. “They've all had big goals and dreams to get to this World Cup. And that will drive our standards up over the next few weeks in training,” Townsend said.

The bloom is truly off the Scottish National Party, which has continued to dominate political life here in the almost decade since it lost the independence referendum. The party has held majorities in the devolved Parliament and in the Scottish seats at Westminster, and a volley of opinion polls, routinely reporting that Scots under the age of 49 favor independence, bolstered the sense that Scottish independence was a historical inevitability. Ms. Sturgeon insists that she is innocent of any wrongdoing. But even before the allegations, Ms. Sturgeon’s plans for independence had run out of steam. (Ms. Sturgeon’s lackluster successor, Humza Yousaf, has not revitalized the movement.)

Royal destinations you need to visit in the UK

A version of this story appeared in the July 7 edition of CNN’s Royal News, a weekly dispatch bringing you the inside track on Britain’s royal family. Research in 2011 by Visit Britain found that around 60% of tourists to the UK are likely to visit places associated with the royal family, according to Ross Bennett-Cook, a visiting lecturer at the School of Architecture and Cities at London’s University of Westminster. While there is no more recent data on royal sites specifically, in 2022 Visit Britain found that history and heritage were the biggest pull factors for tourists. Peter Titmuss/UCG/Universal Images Group/Getty ImagesCornwall: Dear to local and international tourists alike, Cornwall, on the southwestern tip of the UK pointing out into the Atlantic Ocean, is also a special destination for the royal family.
